Aircraft Parameter Identification
  • FRG's unique aircraft identification algorithm not only estimates aerodynamic parameters from flight test data to develop dynamic models but also verifies the sensor consistency and accuracy. Sensor errors such as biases and scale factors are estimated as part of the aircraft parameter identification process.
  • FRG routinely uses the aircraft identification algorithm to update the aerodynamic models of its In-Flight Simulators. Model updates are made both to linear and non-linear aerodynamic parameters and to wind tunnel table look-up data.
  • FRG provides complete model development assistance to its customers. This includes:
    • Supplying and installing the aircraft identification algorithm at the customer facility
    • Identification algorithm training
    • Assistance in developing fight test program for and unique maneuvers aerodynamic model development
    • Flight data analysis assistance

PID software has been used extensively to update the VISTA aerodynamic model.

Flight Control Analysis
  • FRG has extensive experience in Flight Control analysis, design and development. It has designed and implemented the digital Fly-By-Wire (FBW) flight control systems for all its In-Flight Simulator aircraft.
  • FRG has provided assistance to several aircraft development programs. Assistance has included Flight Control System analysis, ground simulation evaluations and In-Flight Simulation implementation and evaluations.
  • Calspan's experienced test pilots and control engineers bring a unique perspective to the assistance we offer to our customers having been exposed many designs.
  • Calspan has provided flight qualities and flight control development expertise to numerous aircraft development programs in support of the prime manufacturers and systems program offices. These programs have included the B-1, B-2, YF-22, YF-23, F-22, National AeroSpace Plane X-30, Space Shuttle, Sweden's JAS-39 Gripen, and Israel's Lavi, among others.
Flying Qualities Analysis
  • FRG has a long heritage in the development of aircraft flying quality research going back to our earliest years.
  • We have established the methods and techniques for analysis of aircraft flying qualities and pilot-in-the-loop evaluation of control system designs, including the development of the Cooper-Harper Pilot Rating scale with NASA.
  • FRG helped collect much of the data needed for handling qualities criteria development and contributed to the
    • Military Specification for Flying Qualities of Piloted Airplanes (MIL-F-8785B) and
    • Military Specification for the Flying Qualities of Piloted Vertical or Short Takeoff Or Landing Aircraft (MIL-F-83300).
  • FRG developed the Neal-Smith handling qualities criterion which has been used extensively in flight control analysis.
  • Calspan has provided handling qualities evaluation assistance to many aircraft development programs.
