Traffic Safety Fair a Huge Success

May 28, 2010

BUFFALO, N.Y., May 28, 2010 – The Niagara County Stop DWI office, in conjunction with the Niagara County Sheriff's Office, NY State Police, NYS Parks Police, NYS DOT, Calspan, NITTEC, Operation Life Saver, and members of the Niagara Falls Air Reserve station, recently completed the 15th annual Niagara Regional Traffic Safety Fair. The event ran from May 19 - May 28 and had approximately 3,400 students from six counties. Students watch a short movie on drinking and driving, listen to a "victim impact" speaker relating to a tragedy involving drinking and driving, and attend presentations by the participating agencies concerning different safety issues such as wearing a seatbelt, texting while driving, etc. The students also participate in various activities wearing goggles that simulate intoxication. These activities include performing field sobriety tests and driving a golf cart through a cone course. Licensed students then drive a vehicle (with a certified police EVOC driver) through a set course with cones and attempt to text on their cell phone while driving. The day ends with Calspan's controlled 30 MPH side impact collision featuring unbelted crash test dummies. The goal of the day is to communicate the importance of driving safely and intelligently, and its impact on the students is profound. Calspan is pleased to continue to support this important event.
